Benefits of Journaling for Your Mental Health & Wellbeing

The benefits of journaling for your mental health & wellbeing I believe in the power of journaling as a form of self-inquiry, personal development and a vessel of healing that everyone must practice - let me tell you why.My debut book HEARTFUL is filled with journaling prompts for this reason: the first step to connect within ourselves is to understand, and to understand we need to inquire within self, and putting pen to paper is the best way.

WHY IS THAT?

 According to research, journaling has been proven to boost wellbeing and give people better understanding of their needs (Tartakovsky, 2022). In addition, journaling can help us accept rather than judge our mental experiences, which leads to having fewer negative emotional experiences when in stressful situations (Ford, Lam, John, & Mauss, 2018; Baikie & Wilhelm, 2005).Journaling also has been proven to have these positive effects on mental health including reducing anxiety, depression, breaking cycles of overthinking, improving awareness, emotional regulation and stress management (WebMD.com, 2021).TYPES OF JOURNALING THAT WORK BESTTwo kinds of journaling have been proven especially effective:1. Expressive writing about emotions and experiences2. Gratitude journaling to write about what you are grateful for in your lifeSo, my question to you is. Do you have a journaling practice?If not, this email has included many reasons why to start.It is the number one connecting practice I vouch for and use within my community and coaching all the time.

HOW TO START?

Simple. Take a piece of paper and pen and answering as simple questions as: "how am I feeling right now?" and "what am I grateful for?" and allowing the pen to flow without judgment is the way to begin.The first question prompts for expressive journaling and the latter for gratitude.Don't worry about pronunciations or spelling. Start small, even a few minutes will do.Pick a time and place where you can do it at peace.You can pick your medium, if you don't fancy pen and paper, use your note app, write on your laptop - write how feels right to you.

As the year draws near, reflecting and journaling on your 2023 and its wins, triumphs and lessons is key to connect with yourself and realign, re-energise for 2024. To take in the year mindfully like this really sets the foundation for a year of clarity and aligned new year.It is like cleaning your closet - reorganising your thoughts and decluttering what does not serve you anymore while also taking moment to count blessings and learnings for further growth.
