Let's have a real talk about burnout and rest
Let's have a real talk about burnout and rest.
We all experience burnout to some degree, and I wanted to gather some experts' knowledge to raise awareness. What is burnout?"Feeling exhausted and overwhelmed by everything you have to do, but still worrying that you're not doing enough." - Emily Nagasaki, the Author of Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress CycleResonates? Me, too. We all go through this at times. It is human.According to the Maslach Burnout Inventory, burnout occurs when three factors are present at the same time: 1. Emotional Exhaustion: Characterized by feeling depleted and like you don’t have any energy.2. Depersonalization:A distant or indifferent attitude towards work and/or colleagues.3. A Reduced Sense of Personal Accomplishment The case of burnout is severe, if you experience all three. However, I want you to take precaution if you are feeling any of the above and prioritise rest.Life challenges and stresses us out. Therefore, learning about burnout and what it looks like to prevent it is key. The key way to prevent burnout is prioritise rest and recovery.I personally need to improve this, so I am writing this, because I need this reminder as much as many of you might. We are really good at doing, but being and resting can be hard.As I wrote in my book HEARTFUL: "Rest is sometimes the best progress you can make."
What is rest, really?
“Rest is, quite simply, when you stop using a part of you that’s used up, worn out, damaged, or inflamed, so that it has a chance to renew itself.”― Emily Nagoski, Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress CycleSo, if you feel burnt out or extremely stressed. You must stop using that part of you that feels it. If you're doing a job like I am where you are constantly psychologically supporting people, you need to switch off from it to rest. If your job is emotionally taxing, give yourself space in that area. If you're in a work where physical labour is a lot, you need to rest physically.
Seven ways how to cultivate rest in your life:
Prevent burnout by taking time out to rest and recover that part of yourself that feels run down.
Take time offline without your phone. Our phones are the source of constant notifications and noise, and thus, causing stress.
Normalise working in spurts and taking more breaks. E.g. recharge your battery by taking a long walk or fitting in a midday nap.
Get a good night’s sleep. This is the most important kind of rest. When you sleep well, you can be and do well in life.
Exercise to recharge your cognitive performance.
Make time for your favorite activities, hobbies, and engage in deep play.
Make time for quiet and stillness. Make time for sitting and for doing nothing.
I hope this helps you to be a bit aware of stress, burnout symptoms and how to cultivate more rest in your life. And remember: you are enough, just as you are. You don't need to do anything to be enough. You are a gift to this world just by being in it.I am sending you love and resilience to keep connecting and moving whatever you're navigating through right now.Essi
