From "I can't" to "I can"
What high jumping, cold plunging, and public speaking taught me about fear, belief, and why the only real limit is the one in your mind.
Dear reader,
Yesterday, I went for a walk with my brother’s girlfriend, and we stumbled upon a high jump set up.
We looked at each other and thought: Let’s give it a go.
I started at 1 meter. Easy.
Then 105 cm. Still fine.
Then they raised it to 110 cm and—
suddenly, my stomach dropped.
Yikes. I can’t do it.
What was fascinating was how quickly fear sneaked in.
I mean… what was I even afraid of?
It’s just a pole that falls if you miss.
But that’s the thing, isn’t it?
In life, we often fear failing so much that we don’t even try.
My first instinct wasn’t to jump, it was to step away.
Afraid I’d fall, maybe get a bruise in the process.
Yet here’s the truth: if we never try, we never know.
I’d rather jump and get a little hurt than walk away and regret not trying.
It’s the same with cold plunging.
At first, I thought, I can’t.
Then I tried, and I could.
And the more I've done it, the better I’ve gotten at it.
The same applies to public speaking.
The first time back in high school was terrifying.
Now, after doing it again and again, it feels almost natural.
It reminds me of Theodore Roosevelt’s words:
"Believe you can, and you’re halfway there."
And Audrey Hepburn’s:
“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!”
And
The moment I told myself I can, I cleared that jump.
I plunged into that icy water.
I stood on that stage.
Sometimes, the limit isn’t in your body or skills. It’s in your mind.
You are your only limit, defined by the stories you tell yourself.
So, a few questions for your own self-connection:
Where in your life are you saying, “I can’t”?
What might happen if you turned it into “I can” instead?
What feels impossible right now?
And what could change if you truly believed—in your heart and body—that it was possible?
If you’re ready to start flipping your stories, book a Connection Coaching Call with me here.
Because the truth is: you are your own limit and you can redefine it by rewriting your stories.
Heartfully,
Essi
P.S. For a long time, I carried the belief that we couldn’t do men’s Walk & Talk clubs.
Why would men come? I thought… women do this kind of thing more naturally.
And yet, here we are, hosting our second one this Saturday.
If you’re a guy (or know one) who feels socially anxious, or finds talking about feelings and real-life stuff hard—this is the space to turn I can’t into I can.
